Sant'Aspreno of Naples honored as patron saint on August 3

The Catholic Church in Italy marks August 3, 2026 as the feast day of Sant'Aspreno of Naples, recognized as the city’s first bishop and co‑patron saint. Tradition places Aspreno in the late first to early second century, when he is said to have been appointed by the Apostle Peter, who passed through Naples on his way to Rome. Under Aspreno’s pastoral care the early Christian community built its first places of worship, including Santa Maria del Principio, the predecessor of today’s Duomo di Napoli, and the church of San Pietro ad Aram.

His relics are venerated in the Treasury of San Gennaro, where a silver bust is displayed, and a chapel dedicated to him stands in the city. Local devotion invokes Sant'Aspreno especially against migraine, and his memory remains a vivid part of Naples’ religious and cultural identity.
