Italian communities rally for elderly during World Grandparents Day
World Grandparents Day is observed on 26 July and was instituted by Pope Francis; the 2026 theme is “I will not forget you”. In Italy, a range of organisations have expanded programmes to combat elderly isolation, especially during the summer heat.
The Community of Sant’Egidio runs “convivenze solidali”, co‑housing units where two to four seniors share an apartment while keeping private space. In Padua the group is opening the Casa dell’amicizia with two apartments for two people and one for up to six; in Rome it operates more than one hundred such homes. Sant’Egidio’s Veneto coordinator Alessandra Coin and president Marco Impagliazzo say the model recreates a family‑like environment and reduces the risk of seniors moving into institutional care.
Auser Umbria has mobilised roughly 800 volunteers to provide food, shelter and social contact for frail elders as extreme temperatures and the shortage of caregiver staff increase the danger of isolation. President Manlio Mariotti warned that the heat emergency adds new layers of need that voluntary groups alone cannot fully address.
National figures show the scale of the issue: Italy has about 9.9 million people living alone, 4.6 million of whom are over 65, and ISTAT reports that roughly 845 000 seniors have no one to rely on in emergencies. In Siracusa province, a quarter of residents are over 65 and nearly 40 % of households consist of a single person, according to Forum president Salvo Sorbello.
Beyond Italy, Gaza’s elderly are enduring severe water and electricity shortages amid ongoing conflict. Residents share a single fan, purchase electricity at high prices, and rely on volunteer‑distributed water, highlighting the universal vulnerability of seniors in crisis situations.
