Santiago Caputo defends Malvinas sovereignty legislative project

Santiago Caputo, a key advisor to President Javier Milei, has publicly defended the government's legislative initiative regarding sovereignty over the Malvinas Islands. Responding to reports suggesting the project might be stalled due to international pressure, Caputo dismissed the claims as “FAKE NEWS” and asserted that the cause remains a priority for the administration.

Caputo stated that most provincial governors and allied legislative blocs in both the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate have expressed support for the bill. The controversy follows media reports indicating potential difficulties in achieving a quorum within the Defense, Criminal Legislation, and Foreign Relations committees. There are also concerns regarding specific articles of the bill, such as those establishing prison sentences for foreign-funded interference.

While some reports suggest that the United States has expressed concern regarding the impact of the law on the investment climate—specifically regarding penalties for unauthorized oil exploration in disputed waters—Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno has dismissed the existence of such diplomatic pressure.
