Santiago Caputo links Falkland Islands sovereignty to UK Islamization claims

Santiago Caputo, a senior advisor to Argentine President Javier Milei, has linked the sovereignty dispute over the Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas) to religious and demographic shifts in the United Kingdom. In a series of social media posts, Caputo claimed that the UK is being “colonized by Islam,” describing this as a historical tragedy and a risk to Western civilization. He argued that the recovery of the islands is not merely a national cause for Argentina but a necessary action for the West to prevent the influence of an Islamic state in the South Atlantic.

Caputo’s remarks were prompted by a video showing British Labour MP Sagal Abdi-Wali taking her oath of office over the Quran. The posts were widely shared and replicated by President Milei, adding an ideological and religious dimension to the long-standing territorial dispute.

These statements coincide with legal actions taken by the Argentine government, which has requested the Tribunal of the Sea in Hamburg to suspend oil exploration activities in the waters surrounding the islands. The escalation in rhetoric follows recent tensions regarding British offshore projects and the strategic importance of the South Atlantic region.
