Santiago Court of Appeals document reveals use of AI prompts

The Santiago Court of Appeals has come under scrutiny after a judicial document was discovered containing instructions for a generative artificial intelligence system. The document, which included a detailed prompt, was found within a case involving a civil debt dispute between an agricultural company and a debtor.

The exposed prompt explicitly instructed the AI to “act as a Judge of the Court of Appeals” to draft the reasoning section of a sentence. It included specific stylistic rules, such as using short sentences, the third person, and specific transitional connectors like “Furthermore” and “Finally.”

While the prompt itself referred to an amparo resource (a constitutional protection writ) rather than the civil appeal case in question, the incident highlights a significant failure in judicial workflow controls. The presence of the prompt under official electronic signatures suggests that the content was not properly reviewed before being finalized and notified, raising questions about the use of AI in drafting judicial decisions.
