Santiago de Compostela faces severe drought

Santiago de Compostela and its surrounding region are facing a “severe drought,” according to data from the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC). José Ángel Docobo, scientific coordinator of the Ramón María Aller Astronomical Observatory, reported that since February 19, 2026, the meteorological station has recorded only 181.4 liters per square meter.

This figure represents approximately one-quarter of the typical annual rainfall for this period. The current situation is more severe than the historical drought of 1990, which saw 206.1 liters per square meter during the same timeframe. While the region has experienced short periods of drought before, such as in July 2020, the current levels are the lowest recorded in 15 years.
