Santiago de Compostela prepares for the 2027 Holy Year
Preparations are underway for the Holy Year 2027 (Xacobeo) in Santiago de Compostela. Archbishop Francisco José Prieto has introduced the theme for the event, “Al ver la estrella se llenaron de inmensa alegría,” emphasizing the importance of Christian hospitality and welcoming pilgrims in a modern, disconnected world.
Galician President Alfonso Rueda and tourism officials recently held a presentation in Madrid to highlight the synergy between historical tradition and future planning for the pilgrimage. The event underscored the role of the Camino de Santiago as a vital cultural and spiritual corridor that has historically connected Europe.
In Santiago de Compostela, the historic center remains organized around a monumental ring of four plazas surrounding the cathedral, including the Praza do Obradoiro. This area serves as the institutional and religious heart of the city, managing the flow of pilgrims and visitors through its medieval heritage and academic life.
