Santiago de los Caballeros to host new regional documentary archive
The Regional Archive of Santiago de los Caballeros will soon be inaugurated in the Dominican Republic to improve the organization and conservation of the region's historical documentary heritage. This initiative aims to strengthen archival management and preserve the historical memory of the country's northern zone.
The establishment of this center is supported by Article 34 of the General Archives Law No. 481-08, which mandates the creation of regional archives to decentralize archival functions and disseminate documentary heritage across different territories. The new facility will utilize technology and specialized procedures to ensure that historical, administrative, and cultural documents remain in optimal condition for future generations.
Roberto Cassá, director of the Archivo General de la Nación (AGN), stated that regional archives allow documents to be kept close to where they were produced and where the majority of users are located. He noted that Santiago serves as a second capital for the Republic, managing a high volume of documentation from local and central government institutions, as well as the public.
