Santiago del Estero: Historic photo from 1993 unrest honored

To commemorate World Photographer Day, historical archives have highlighted an emblematic image captured by photojournalist Daniel Pérez during the ‘Santiagueñazo’ of 1993 in Santiago del Estero, Argentina.

The black-and-white photograph, which received an award from the Association of Argentine Journalistic Entities (ADEPA), depicts a burning overturned vehicle and a man pulling a large chain amidst smoke and onlookers. The image serves as a visual record of the social and institutional unrest that occurred on December 16, 1993, during a period of intense economic and political crisis in the province.
