Santiago del Estero road safety expert calls for systemic reforms
Accidentology expert Alfredo Pellene has raised concerns regarding the high frequency of traffic accidents and fatalities in Santiago del Estero, Argentina. Pellene emphasized that road safety must be treated as a state policy involving sustained prevention, training, and control measures.
He specifically criticized the current training of traffic control agents and the procedures used to issue driver's licenses. Pellene argued that evaluations must be more rigorous to ensure drivers possess the necessary knowledge and responsibility. He also noted that existing traffic regulations are insufficient if they fail to modify driver behavior.
Key contributing factors identified include reckless driving, alcohol consumption, and a lack of awareness. Additionally, the expert noted that difficulties in accessing public transportation have led to an increase in motorcycle use, necessitating expanded training for these riders. Pellene highlighted the high number of young people involved in fatal accidents and warned that these incidents place a significant burden on the healthcare system.
