Santiago Giménez warns England ahead of 2026 World Cup match in Mexico

Mexico striker Santiago Giménez, who plays for AC Milan, says his nation is a dangerous outsider for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Co‑hosting the tournament with the United States and Canada, Mexico will open the competition on 11 June at the high‑altitude Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. Giménez highlighted the stadium’s 7,000‑foot elevation, heat and passionate fans as factors that will challenge any opponent, especially England, whom he expects to face in a possible round‑of‑16 clash on 6 July.

He expressed confidence that Mexico can go beyond the historical “fifth‑game curse” and aim for the title, citing the team’s unbeaten run in recent friendlies and a Gold Cup victory over the United States. Giménez stressed that the combination of altitude, home support and his own determination will make Mexico a tough rival for England and other nations.

The warning comes as Mexico prepares for its second appearance as a host (previously in 1970 and 1986) and seeks to break a 40‑year record without advancing beyond the quarter‑finals.
