Santiago government trains 200 participants in community composting program

The Santiago regional government, together with the NGO Geociclos, held a two‑hour training session for about 200 participants from community organisations, neighbourhood councils and schools in the Parque O’Higgins environmental education centre. The event launched the second phase of the "Nos Compostamos Bien II" programme, which will distribute 1,000 communal compost bins and work with 600 local organisations and 200 educational institutions across the metropolitan region.

In the first phase, 7,000 household kits were provided, preventing roughly 4,400 tonnes of organic waste from landfill each year and cutting CO₂ emissions by over 2,700 tonnes. Participants were taught composting techniques, proper bin use, and sustainable kitchen practices aimed at reducing food waste. Governor Claudio Orrego and Geociclos director Andrea Arriagada urged additional groups to apply for the remaining spots in the programme.
