Santiago I vessel arrives at Puerto Quequén with wind-assisted propulsion
The Santiago I, a tanker and chemical carrier, has arrived at Puerto Quequén, Argentina, marking a significant step in maritime sustainability. The vessel, managed by the Spanish company Marflet Marine, utilizes an innovative wind-assisted propulsion system to complement its conventional engines.
The ship is equipped with four 22-meter-high eSAIL suction sails developed by the Spanish firm bound4blue. Unlike traditional canvas sails, these aerodynamic vertical structures use a suction mechanism to modify airflow and generate lift, providing additional momentum. This technology is estimated to reduce fuel consumption and energy use by between 10% and 15%, depending on wind conditions and maritime routes.
The Santiago I's arrival follows a cargo operation involving 14,157 tons of UAN, with Bunge linked to the operation. Marflet Marine becomes the first Spanish merchant fleet owner to adopt this specific wind technology in its naval operations.
