Santiago Matías plans new party for Dominican 2028 election
Dominican entrepreneur and media figure Santiago Matías announced he will not accept a presidential candidacy from the Social Christian Reformist Party (PRSC) and instead intends to create his own political organization for the 2028 general elections.
The move has sparked discussion of the legal steps required under Dominican law. The Constitution, Law 33‑18 on Parties, and Law 20‑23 on the Electoral Regime mandate that any new party must notify the Central Electoral Board, submit founding documents, statutes, a program of government, and details of its leadership. Crucially, the party must also demonstrate public support equal to at least 2 % of the valid votes cast in the most recent presidential election, as stipulated in Article 15 of Law 33‑18.
Matías’s proposal therefore hinges on meeting these procedural and quantitative thresholds before the party can be officially recognized and participate in the upcoming vote.
