Santiago Metro Line 5 disrupted by train explosion and smoke

An emergency occurred on Friday afternoon on Line 5 of the Santiago Metro after an explosion and smoke were reported in a train near the Rodrigo de Araya station. The incident caused the temporary closure of eight stations, ranging from Rodrigo de Araya to Vicente Valdés, and suspended connections with Line 4.

Carabineros confirmed the cause was a technical failure involving a train tire that produced sparks and an electrical arc, which generated smoke inside the carriage. Passengers were evacuated from the stations and the affected train in a timely manner. No injuries or fatalities were reported.

Metro de Santiago reported that service was partially restricted to the stretch between Plaza de Maipú and Ñuble during the disruption. Red Movilidad deployed support buses between Ñuble and Vicente Valdés to assist commuters. Service was fully normalized by 9:00 PM on Friday, with all stations and connections operational.
