Santiago Metro Line 5 fire closes six stations including Santa Isabel

A fire broke out on a train at the Santa Isabel station on Santiago Metro’s Line 5 on July 27, 2026, producing smoke that spread to the station’s platform. The incident prompted the closure of six stations – Santa Isabel, Plaza de Armas, Bellas Artes, Baquedano, Parque Bustamante and Irarrázaval – and limited service to the stretch between Plaza de Maipú and Santa Ana/Ñuble to Vicente Valdés.

The Cuerpo de Bomberos de Santiago responded with about 200 volunteers from 14 fire companies, deploying more than 30 fire trucks and ambulances. The fire started in one carriage, destroying it completely and causing minor damage to two adjacent cars. Power to the line was cut before crews entered the tunnel. No structural damage to the station or ticket offices was reported, and there were no injuries. Extensive ventilation work continued to clear the smoke generated by burning plastic and rubber components.
