Construction has officially begun on Metro Line 9 in Santiago, Chile, a major infrastructure project aimed at improving connectivity between the capital's center and southern communes. Led by President Gabriel Boric, the project represents a total investment of approximately 2,733 million dollars.

The new line will span roughly 27 kilometers and include 19 stations, running from Puente Cal y Canto to Plaza de Puente Alto. It will traverse eight communes, including Santiago, San Miguel, San Joaquín, La Granja, San Ramón, La Pintana, and Puente Alto. Notably, the project will integrate the La Pintana commune into the Metro network for the first time, providing better access to areas like La Legua and Bajos de Mena.

This expanded route is expected to significantly reduce travel times. Commuters traveling from central Santiago to Puente Alto are projected to see a 28% reduction in travel time, dropping from 48 minutes by bus to just 35 minutes via the new line. The project was reformulated in 2023, moving away from a 2018 proposal that was smaller in scope and affected by infrastructure damage and tender cancellations following the events of 2019.
