Santiago Monorail to begin train testing in October
The Santiago Monorail in the Dominican Republic is scheduled to begin train testing in October, with the goal of entering service before the end of the year. Jhael Isa, Executive Director of Fitram, confirmed that electrical connections are already complete.
The system will consist of 13 kilometers of track and 14 stations, complemented by a 3.2-kilometer workshop yard. It is part of a broader integrated transport network for Santiago that includes a cable car, seven bus corridors, and a public bicycle system. The monorail is designed to operate with 90-second intervals between trains, reaching speeds of 60 to 80 kilometers per hour.
Structural work is nearing completion, with the final column expected to be finished shortly. The project includes significant engineering components such as two bridges over the Gurabo and Nibaje ravines and a 500-meter trench-style tunnel. The rollout will be gradual, starting with guided tours before transitioning to full commercial operation. President Luis Abinader noted that the infrastructure aims to reduce travel times and costs for commuters, students, and workers in free trade zones.
