Santiago urban footprint grows 24% amid planning updates

The urban footprint of Santiago has grown by approximately 24% between the 2014–2016 and 2022–2026 periods. Consolidated urban area increased from roughly 76 square kilometers to an estimated 94 square kilometers.

In the broader Santiago metropolitan area, the urban footprint expanded by about 37%, rising from approximately 103 square kilometers to 141 square kilometers.

In response to this growth, the Dominican government is supporting the update of the Municipal Territorial Planning Plan (POT). Minister of the Presidency José Ignacio Paliza met with Mayor Ulises Rodríguez to discuss technical accompaniment provided by the Ministry of Planning and Development to organize the city's expansion and adapt to new urban conditions.
