Santiago: Venezuelan engineer killed by impaired driver

Carlos Paulino Yélamo, a Venezuelan electrical engineer and high-performance athlete, died after being struck by a vehicle in the Macul commune of Santiago, Chile. The incident occurred on Thursday, September 24, as Yélamo was leaving a training session at the SpinHouse Academy sports club.

Preliminary investigations and toxicological tests indicate that the driver, a Chilean citizen, was operating the vehicle under the influence of illicit substances. Witnesses reported that the driver attempted to flee the scene but was intercepted and detained by bystanders until the arrival of the Carabineros de Chile. The suspect, who reportedly has a history of traffic violations including speeding, is currently in preventive detention.

Yélamo's family discovered his body at a Santiago hospital after losing contact with him following his workout. His remains were cremated following a memorial service organized by his sports club.
