South American agriculture faces extreme heat and El Niño weather shifts

Extreme weather patterns are impacting South American agricultural sectors. In Paraguay, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock has issued alerts for an intense heat wave. Temperatures are expected to reach between 42°C and 43°C in the Chaco region, with high humidity levels increasing the thermal sensation. Authorities have advised producers to ensure water availability and provide shade for livestock to mitigate thermal stress.

In Argentina, the El Niño phenomenon is projected to bring a wetter-than-normal spring to the Northeast region, including Corrientes, Misiones, Chaco, and Formosa. While increased rainfall may benefit summer crops like soy and corn, experts warn that excessive precipitation and late frosts could hinder planting, damage rural roads, and create sanitary issues for crops. In specific areas like Sáenz Peña, temperatures are forecasted to hit extreme highs of 46°C, though a cold front is expected to provide eventual relief.
