A 25‑year‑old resident, Elanny Genao Hernández, was crushed by a heavy‑equipment gredar while riding a motorbike to her job in the Don Jaime community of Santiago Oeste. The accident occurred amid construction work for the Santiago monorail.

Her family held a wake at her parents’ home on Calle 50 in La Piña before burying her at the Cristo Está Vivo cemetery in Ingenio Arriba. Hundreds of community members attended, expressing sorrow and urging authorities to launch a thorough investigation to determine the cause and any criminal or civil liability.
