Santo André das Tojeiras begins centenary celebrations

The parish of Santo André das Tojeiras in the Castelo Branco municipality has launched celebrations for its centenary. While the official 100-year anniversary of its elevation to a parish occurs on November 1, 2026, the commemorative program began on September 19 with a large event that drew approximately 1,100 residents, natives, and friends of the community.

The festivities included a mass and procession in honor of Saint Andrew, followed by a community lunch and musical entertainment. A commemorative plaque was unveiled at the former home of Adelino Martins dos Reis, the parish's first inhabitant. The timing of the event honors local traditions, including the historical pilgrimage and community gatherings.

Carlos Gonçalves, President of the Parish Council, emphasized the importance of community unity and the need for structural projects, such as the Alvito Dam. Leopoldo Rodrigues, President of the Castelo Branco Municipal Council, noted the evolution of living conditions in the region and observed positive signs of demographic reversal, with new residents moving to the area seeking security and comfort.
