Santo André launches emergency measles vaccination for infants

The city of Santo André in the ABC Paulista region has launched an emergency immunization campaign for infants following the confirmation of a measles case in the municipality. The strategy involves administering a “dose zero” of the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine to babies aged between 6 months and 11 months and 29 days.

Local health authorities emphasized that this extra dose is a preventive measure to create an immunological barrier and does not replace the standard doses scheduled in the National Immunization Program, which are administered at 12 and 15 months. The regular vaccination schedule remains available for free through the Unified Health System (SUS) for individuals aged 12 months to 59 years.

The initiative comes amid increased vigilance in the state of São Paulo, which has recorded 36 confirmed measles cases this year. The majority of these cases are located in the state capital (32 cases), with additional cases reported in São Bernardo do Campo (2), Guarulhos (1), and Santo André (1).
