Santo Domingo cargo trucks defy Malecón traffic restrictions
Heavy cargo trucks continue to violate traffic restrictions along George Washington Avenue (El Malecón) in Santo Domingo, despite long-standing municipal and national regulations. These violations persist even after a recent fatal accident involving a tanker truck that resulted in two deaths.
Regulations dating back to 2012 have attempted to restrict heavy transit in the area, with more recent ordinances defining Restricted Access Zones to prohibit trucks with more than three axles in specific urban sectors. While the deputy director of Intrant stated that an automated fines system is ready, the approval of its specific rules remains pending. Currently, enforcement relies on Digesett traffic officers to ensure heavy vehicles use the Santo Domingo bypass rather than city avenues.
