Santo Domingo Este community launches campaign for $746 million health city

Community organizations in Santo Domingo Este have launched a national campaign titled ‘Tu firma es tu voz’ (Your signature is your voice) to advocate for the construction of a ‘Ciudad Sanitaria’ (Health City). The initiative aims to collect 250,000 signatures to support the development of a high-complexity hospital complex in the municipality.

The proposed project involves an estimated investment of over $746 million. It is designed as a third-level hospital facility with a capacity of 2,000 beds distributed across ten specialized units. Proponents state the project is necessary to address the current deficit in medical infrastructure for the municipality, which houses approximately 1.25 million residents.

The campaign is led by community leader Julio José García and has received support from municipal authorities, including Mayor Dío Astacio, as well as various religious, business, and social sectors. Signatures will be collected through both digital and in-person mechanisms.
