Santo Domingo Este mayor announces fines for illegal trash disposal

Dío Astacio, the mayor of Santo Domingo Este, has announced a new measure to combat illegal waste disposal in the municipality. Under the proposed rule, individuals caught throwing trash bags into public streets will face a fine of RD$5,000 per bag.

The initiative aims to reduce waste accumulation on avenues, sidewalks, and other public spaces, which the mayor noted can obstruct drainage systems and cause sanitary issues, particularly during rainy periods. Astacio emphasized that cleaning efforts must be paired with citizen responsibility and deterrents to prevent the streets from becoming improvised landfills.
