Ciudad Colonial to implement traffic calming pilot plan

Authorities in Santo Domingo will implement a pilot traffic calming plan in the Ciudad Colonial starting Monday, August 17. The initiative aims to reduce congestion and prioritize pedestrians, residents, and visitors by limiting through-traffic in the historic district.

The plan will operate permanently, seven days a week, within a polygon bounded by Arzobispo Meriño Street (west), Padre Billini Street (south), and Las Damas Street (east). To enter the cathedral area, drivers must use the north of Arzobispo Meriño via Palo Hincado and Juan Isidro Pérez streets, or access from Avenida Mella.

Access via Padre Billini Street will be restricted, with mandatory right turns at the intersection with Arzobispo Meriño. Exceptions to these restrictions are limited to emergency vehicles and waste collection trucks. The project is a coordinated effort involving INTRANT, DIGESETT, the National District Mayor's Office, the Ministry of Culture, and the National Police.
