Santo Domingo Metro station to be named after singer Enerolisa Núñez
The Dominican Republic's Chamber of Deputies has approved a bill to name a station of the Santo Domingo Metro extension after the late singer Enerolisa Núñez. Known as the ‘Reina de la Salve’ (Queen of Salve), Núñez was a prominent figure in preserving and promoting the salve, an Afro-Dominican musical and spiritual expression.
The station will be located at the entrance of Mata Los Indios in Villa Mella, within the Santo Domingo Norte municipality, which was the artist's birthplace. The project, authored by Deputy Dulce Rojas, mandates that the Metropolitan Transport Company (EMT) officially name the station after Núñez and install an identification plaque featuring her biographical details.
Núñez, who passed away on February 28, 2026, at the age of 74, began singing salve at age eight. The legislation aims to honor her cultural contributions and ensure her legacy as a representative of Dominican folklore and Afro-Dominican traditions is passed down to future generations.
