Santo Domingo Norte waste management faces conflicting reports

In Santo Domingo Norte, local authorities and critics are presenting conflicting views regarding the management of waste and public services.

Mayor Betty Gerónimo stated that waste is “already very controlled” in the municipality. She attributed ongoing issues with improvised landfills and accumulated trash to a lack of civic awareness, noting that some residents dispose of waste immediately after collection trucks have passed. Gerónimo emphasized that new routes and frequencies have been established and called for citizens to cooperate by knowing when and where to dispose of refuse.

Conversely, local commentary has criticized the administration for past failures in addressing urban decay. Critics have alleged that issues such as accumulating trash, rising funeral costs, and recurring flooding were ignored for months while the media remained silent due to official influence. These critics argue that the sudden focus on transparency and budget compliance coincides with a reduction in official financial support to local media outlets.
