Santo Domingo transit: tram project stalls while integrated fare caps rides at RD$35

The planned surface tram corridor linking Haina to the centre of the Distrito Nacional, announced by the Dominican Republic’s public‑transport trust FITRAM with an estimated US$300 million investment, has not progressed beyond preliminary formulation. Construction originally slated for the first half of 2025 never began, the official project status remains "Pending" and no definitive route length, station count, environmental impact study, financing or construction contracts have been disclosed.

Separately, the Metropolitan Transport Company (EMET) introduced an integrated fare system allowing passengers to travel across the Metro, Teleférico, OMSA buses and several bus corridors for a maximum of RD$35 per journey. The Metro fare stays at RD$20 for single‑system trips, while the combined fare adds RD$15 for a second mode within 90 minutes, with a third boarding charged no further. Around 300 000 users have already taken advantage of the scheme, which could save up to 40 % for commuters who previously paid roughly RD$55 daily.
