Santo Piana dies after brutal assault during robbery in Tangará
Santo Piana, an 88-year-old man known in various regions of Santa Catarina for performing traditional folk remedies for free, has died in Joaçaba. He succumbed to injuries sustained during a violent robbery at his home in the São Francisco community, located in the interior of Tangará.
The attack occurred during the early hours of August 12, when hooded men invaded the residence. During the robbery, Piana was brutally assaulted, tied up, and burned inside his home. He remained unconscious for several hours before regaining consciousness and managing to call neighbors for help. He was subsequently transported to the Santa Terezinha University Hospital, where his condition worsened, requiring intubation before his death.
The Civil Police have arrested four suspects in connection with the crime. Three men were detained on the day of the incident, and a fourth suspect was apprehended days later. Authorities also located the vehicle stolen during the robbery in the interior of Videira. Investigations are ongoing to determine the specific involvement of each individual and clarify the dynamics of the assault.
