Siracusa hospital project secured, pediatric care expanded in Lentini
The Italian Ministry of Economy and the Sicilian regional government have signed an addendum confirming financing of more than €400 million for a new second‑level hospital in Siracusa. The facility, to be built in the Tremilia district, will provide 438 beds and is expected to replace a decades‑long wait for a modern hospital in the province. Mayor Pippo Gianni has called on the extraordinary commissioner to speed up the construction phase.
At the same time, the provincial health authority has re‑opened a pediatric first‑intervention point at the Lentini hospital to address a chronic shortage of child‑health specialists. The service operates daily with extended hours while the region works to appoint new pediatricians, a process delayed by retirements and staffing gaps.
