Portugal: Legislative updates and regional social investigations

Portugal is seeing several regional and legislative developments. The Assembly of the Republic has approved a new version of the law regarding the flying of flags on public buildings. This revised text, which follows a previous veto by President António José Seguro, allows for flags associated with international commitments made by Portugal. The bill received support from the PSD and IL, while CDS and Chega abstained.

In Viana do Castelo, the Social Security Institute (ISS) has launched an investigation into the Centro Social Paroquial de Barroselas following allegations of mismanagement and poor care for the elderly. A former fiscal council member reported potential financial irregularities, including the sale of property below market value and the consumption of over 833,000 euros from bank reserves since 2018.

Regarding mobility, several municipalities are celebrating European Mobility Week. Águeda is hosting activities for families to promote sustainable transport, while Santo Tirso and the Viseu Dão Lafões region are offering free bus services on the European Car-Free Day to encourage the use of public transit.

Additionally, Ponte de Lima is preparing for the 6th edition of the Lourear a Pevide gastronomic event, scheduled from October 1 to November 30, 2026. The event will feature 25 participating locations showcasing local flavors and Vinhos Verdes Loureiro wines.
