Santo Tomás residents observe Takanakuy tradition in Peru

In the Andean town of Santo Tomás, Peru, residents observe a unique Christmas tradition known as Takanakuy. The practice involves physical combat, including punching and kicking, intended to resolve personal grievances and settle old grudges before the start of the new year.

Participants gather at the local bullring to address various disputes, ranging from property disagreements and romantic issues to minor incidents like spilled drinks. Some individuals participate simply for sport or celebration. The tradition emphasizes reconciliation, as every confrontation is required to begin and end with a hug.

Strict rules govern the matches: participants are prohibited from biting, pulling hair, or striking an opponent who has fallen. Referees are present to maintain order. During the festival, social hierarchies are temporarily suspended, allowing people of different ages, genders, and social statuses to compete against one another.
