Santomarco tunnel failure halts train service between Paola and Cosenza

Train circulation on the line between Paola and Cosenza has been suspended due to a technical failure involving a freight train stuck inside the Santomarco tunnel. Rfi technicians have intervened with a rescue locomotive to tow the stalled freight convoy to the Paola station, an operation that must be completed before service can resume.

The disruption has caused significant delays and the cancellation of several services, including the Intercity 555 from Rome Termini to Reggio Calabria Centrale. Regional train 5583 from Naples was also cancelled, forcing passengers to disembark at Paola. Approximately 200 passengers from regional train 6581, arriving from Reggio Calabria, were left waiting for information regarding alternative connections.

Trenitalia has arranged replacement bus services between Paola and Cosenza. Additionally, a separate electrical failure caused a blackout at the Paola station, leaving some areas in the dark and rendering ticket offices unusable. Security personnel are currently assisting travelers while technical teams work to restore both rail traffic and power.
