Santorini: PETA activists reportedly attacked by donkey drivers
On September 4, 2026, a violent confrontation occurred on the Greek island of Santorini between PETA activists and donkey drivers. The incident took place on the Karavolades stairs, a 500-step route between the old harbor and Fira, while activists were preparing a protest against the use of donkeys and mules for tourist transport.
PETA reported that a group of men attempted to stop the activists from filming, destroyed their protest signs, and verbally abused them. According to video footage released by the organization, the confrontation escalated physically; activists were pushed against walls and down the stairs, and one woman was reportedly struck in the face by a driver.
The Thira Municipality has condemned the violence and stated it is awaiting the results of an official investigation. PETA has announced its intention to file criminal charges. The conflict stems from a long-standing debate regarding animal welfare and the use of working animals as ‘tourist taxis’ on the island.
