Santorini teacher faces housing crisis due to pets

The Panhellenic Animal Welfare and Environmental Federation (PFPO) has intervened regarding a housing crisis facing a primary school teacher in Santorini. The educator, who serves permanently on the island, is unable to secure housing for herself and her five-year-old son due to the presence of two companion animals.

The PFPO has sent a formal letter to the Municipality of Thira and the Cyclades Primary Education Directorate, requesting immediate assistance in finding suitable accommodation. The Federation argues that the inability to find pet-friendly housing highlights a broader social issue in tourist-heavy island regions, where finding housing for essential workers is already difficult.

The organization is calling for the inclusion of ‘pet-friendly’ criteria in the mechanisms used to search for and allocate housing for educators. The PFPO emphasized that responsible pet ownership should not be a social disadvantage that forces individuals to choose between their homes and their animals.
