Santos and Woodside drive Australian energy sector amid global oil shifts

Major Australian energy companies Santos Ltd and Woodside Energy Group Ltd are seeing significant developments amid global oil market volatility. Santos has commenced production at the Pikka Phase One Project in Alaska, where it holds a 51% interest alongside Repsol. The field is expected to average 80,000 barrels per day with an operating cost of approximately US$8 per barrel and an all-in breakeven price of US$45–50 per barrel.

Both Santos and Woodside have benefited from fluctuating crude oil prices, which have been influenced by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. While oil prices have seen recent volatility, both companies have reported improved cash flows and rising production. Woodside recently reported an increase in operating revenue and noted that its Scarborough Energy Project is nearing completion.

Globally, oil production is shifting as the Western Hemisphere sees increased output. Brazil has reached a record 4.5 million barrels per day, and Guyana is now supplying 900,000 barrels per day. Meanwhile, demand dynamics are being shaped by the rise of electric vehicle sales in China and Europe, which may impact long-term oil reliance.
