Santos City Council withdraws tribute to Eduarda Campopiano

The Santos City Council has removed a proposed tribute to Eduarda Campopiano, a councilwoman from Praia Grande and newly elected state deputy, from its legislative agenda. The decision came after the proposal's author, Councilman Sergio Santana (PL), requested the archiving of the motion at the start of the 60th ordinary session.

The tribute, which aimed to recognize Campopiano's election to the São Paulo State Legislative Assembly, faced intense opposition from both lawmakers and the public. Protesters gathered in front of the Chamber and filled the galleries to voice their disapproval.

Critics, including Councilman Benedito Furtado (PSB) and Councilwoman Débora Camilo (PSOL), cited past statements attributed to Campopiano regarding gender-based violence. Opponents highlighted remarks in which she allegedly claimed that femicide does not exist and suggested that men are naturally more aggressive. The mobilization was fueled by concerns over misogyny and the political stance of the honoree.
