Santos FC evaluates goalkeeper Diógenes after error in loss to Atlético-MG

Santos FC is evaluating the position of goalkeeper Diógenes following a decisive error during a 2-1 defeat against Atlético-MG in the Campeonato Brasileiro. The mistake occurred during a corner kick when Diógenes attempted to intercept the ball but failed to reach it, allowing Vitor Hugo to score the equalizer.

Coach Cuca stated that the technical commission intends to meet with the player and the goalkeeper coach to understand the context of the error before making any decisions. Cuca defended the player against public criticism, noting Diógenes' strong performances in previous matches against Flamengo and São Paulo.

The club faces a difficult situation regarding alternatives for the position. Gabriel Brazão is sidelined due to shoulder surgery and is not expected to return to training until the 2027 pre-season, while João Paulo is not currently considered a consolidated option by the coaching staff. Although 18-year-old João Pedro is viewed as a promising talent, the club is hesitant to place him under such high pressure at this stage of his development.
