Santos-Guarujá tunnel project receives R$ 28.2 million in state funding

The São Paulo state government has released R$ 28.2 million in supplementary funds to support the construction of the Santos-Guarujá tunnel. This project, which aims to connect the cities of Santos and Guarujá beneath the port channel, has an estimated total investment of R$ 6.8 billion.

The infrastructure will utilize an immersed tunnel method, where pre-molded concrete modules are manufactured on land and then positioned within a trench on the seabed. The tunnel is expected to feature three lanes per direction, alongside space for light rail vehicles (VLT), pedestrians, and cyclists. The project is being developed through a 30-year public-private partnership (PPP) with the Portuguese group Mota-Engil, which maintains a strategic alliance with China Communications Construction Company (CCCC).

Preparatory works are scheduled to advance starting in 2027, with tunnel assembly projected through 2030. The entire project is expected to be completed and operational by 2031. Once finished, the tunnel is intended to reduce travel times between the two cities from over an hour to approximately five minutes.
