Santos recognizes Ponta da Praia walls as cultural heritage

The Council for the Defense of Cultural Heritage of Santos (Condepasa) has officially recognized the waterfront walls (muretas) of Ponta da Praia as municipal cultural heritage. This designation marks the first time an intangible heritage asset has been recognized in the city.

The decision covers both material and intangible dimensions. The material protection applies to the original remaining section on Avenida Rei Pelé, located between Rua Carlos de Campos and Praça Almirante Gago Coutinho. This ensures that any future interventions in this historical area require prior council approval.

Originally constructed between 1941 and 1945 for pedestrian safety and drainage, the Art Deco-influenced structures have evolved into a major visual symbol of Santos. The intangible recognition acknowledges the walls as a key element of local identity and collective memory, frequently appearing in local crafts, jewelry, and art.
