Santos windstorm kills homeless man Marcelino Izidio dos Santos
A severe windstorm swept the Baixada Santista region of São Paulo on 29 July 2026, producing gusts of up to 111.8 km/h in Santos and 103 km/h in Itanhaém. The strong winds toppled trees and other structures across the coastal cities.
In Santos, a 58‑year‑old homeless man, Marcelino Izidio dos Santos, was struck by a large tree that fell onto Canal 5 on Avenida Almirante Cochrane. He died instantly. Police identified him through necroscopic, toxicological and fingerprint (papiloscopic) examinations performed by the Institute of Identification Ricardo Gumbleton Daunt, confirming his identity despite the lack of personal documents.
The event also caused two additional fatalities: a person in Cesário Lange died after a tree fell, and a 50‑year‑old fisherman perished when a fishing boat capsized in São Sebastião. Emergency teams rescued two workers who had become suspended on a hotel façade in Santos while performing rope‑access maintenance.
The State Defense Civil had issued an alert warning of winds up to 90 km/h, but the actual gusts far exceeded the forecast, prompting widespread damage, power outages, and police investigations into the deaths.
