Santuario de Meritxell: Andorra's spiritual landmark
The Sanctuary of Meritxell serves as a central spiritual landmark in Andorra. Originally a medieval site, the sanctuary underwent a significant transformation following a devastating fire in September 1972 that destroyed the previous structure, including the Romanesque carving of the Virgin.
In response to the destruction, the sanctuary was rebuilt using contemporary architecture designed by the renowned architect Ricardo Bofill. The new structure, which opened in September 1976, blends avant-garde design with inspiration from traditional Andorran Romanesque styles. Today, it remains one of the most visited sites in the Pyrenees and is a key part of the Marian Route.
