Sanyo Chemical and partners establish objective scent evaluation for rosemary ingredients

Sanyo Chemical Industries, Nagase Beauty Care, and Nagase & Co. have established a new method for objectively evaluating the scent quality of rosemary-derived cosmetic ingredients. The research utilizes the high-precision odor sensor ‘FlavoTone®’ combined with Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to visualize and quantify scent data.

Natural ingredients often suffer from scent variations due to growing environments and harvest timing, which can impact product quality. The study confirmed that the sensor technology can accurately identify subtle differences in raw materials and verify the consistency of products using Nagase Beauty Care’s proprietary distillation technology. Additionally, the method proved effective for anomaly detection, such as identifying plant mix-ups or foreign matter contamination.

The companies aim to implement this data-driven approach into manufacturing quality control systems to standardize evaluation and ensure product reliability.
