Sapanca jeweler and wrestling champion expose fake gold scam

Two suspects were detained in the Sapanca district of Sakarya, Turkey, after attempting to sell imitation gold jewelry to multiple jewelers. The fraud was uncovered following an investigation by Hüseyin Memioğlu, a veteran Greco-Roman wrestling world champion and local jeweler.

The incident began when the suspects sold a fake gold necklace at Memioğlu’s shop while he was away. They subsequently visited other jewelers in the district to sell more imitation items. One local jeweler became suspicious of a necklace presented to him and sought Memioğlu’s expertise to verify its authenticity.

Upon inspection, Memioğlu confirmed the item was fake. The deception was further confirmed when a staff member at Memioğlu’s shop noted they had recently purchased an identical item. After comparing the two pieces, Memioğlu and a fellow jeweler alerted the police. Law enforcement officers intercepted and detained the two suspects at another business while they were attempting to exchange more counterfeit goods.
