Sapienza University rector elections spark student protests over voting weight

The Sapienza University of Rome is preparing for rector elections for the 2026-2032 term, with the first round scheduled for October 6 to 9. The Central Electoral Commission (Cec) has issued clarifications regarding its role as an impartial guarantee body and the composition of its membership.

In response to the upcoming vote, student representatives have raised protests, alleging that changes to the electoral regulations aim to silence them. Students claim a new calculation mechanism reduces the weight of the student vote below the 15% threshold guaranteed by previous regulations. The Commission, however, maintains that the application criteria for weighting the student vote remain the same as those used in the 2020 rectorial elections.
