Sapienza University ranks as Italy's top institution in 2026 ARWU
The 2026 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), published by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, has highlighted the performance of several Italian higher education institutions. Sapienza University of Rome secured the top position in Italy for the fifth consecutive year, ranking 153rd globally.
Other notable Italian institutions include the University of Pisa, which ranked 211st worldwide and 4th within Italy, and the University of Florence, which placed in the top 350 globally and 9th nationally. The University of Florence specifically noted high performance in publications within Nature and Science journals.
The ARWU evaluates institutions based on several metrics, including Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, highly cited researchers, publications in major scientific journals, and academic staff productivity.
