Spanish officials to address forest fires and energy crisis in legislative hearings

Spanish officials are preparing for legislative appearances to address the impact of severe summer forest fires and energy market volatility. Sara Aagesen, the Minister for Ecological Transition, has requested to appear before the Congress of Deputies to report on climate emergency actions, wildfire management, and the current geopolitical situation affecting energy markets.

Provisional data from the Ministry indicates that 262,030 hectares have been affected by fires in Spain since January 1, 2026. Notable incidents include the Los Gallardos fire in Almería, which resulted in 13 fatalities, and significant blazes in Madrid, Ávila, and Toledo. While the early summer saw a higher rate of destruction compared to 2025, recent figures suggest the total area burned is currently lower than the previous year's peak.

In Andalusia, Vice President Antonio Sanz has requested to appear before the Andalusian Parliament. He intends to provide updates on regional wildfire management, recent seismic activity in Granada, and the regional government's stance on the central government's response to drug trafficking operations.
